Periorbital cellulitis, known as preseptal cellulitis, is a bacterial infection of the eye tissue causing inflammation and redness around the eyes. This infection may be a result of another infection in your body such as sinusitis or conjunctives. This kind of infection is a serious matter and must be treated immediately because it can lead to serious eye complications which may result in blurry vision or loss of vision. It is important to cure this type infection as soon as possible and before it can spread into the eye tissue. However, diagnosis of periorbital cellulitis is commonly seen on children and younger adults.
What causes periorbital cellulitis?
Periorbital cellulitis usually occurs through an infection of the conjunctives or sinuses near the nose. This type of infection can be the result of any pain or damage around the eye or it may be through an extension of another infection in your body. Another reason why many people get infected by periorbital cellulitis is because of an insect bite or injuries or simply touching your wound with unclean hands. In addition, people with low immune system are more prone to this infection. Infections can easily be acquired by a person having low defense mechanism since the body cannot resist the infection caused by bacteria.
Symptoms of Periorbital Cellulitis
Periorbital cellulitis mainly affects the eye tissue. It may also occur around the eyes, which cause swelling and inflammation. Common symptoms of periorbital cellulitis include redness and swelling of the eye. Normally, the infected area around the eyes is swelling and reddish in color. Redness in the white part of the eye is also a symptom of this infection. If you see that the white in your eye is already red, then you can be assured that periorbital cellulitis is already on your eyes. One of the common sign of this infection is also deep fever. You should always bear in mind to check for your temperature when having an inflammation on your eye to know if you are affected of this infection. After knowing all the symptoms, immediately consult your doctor and ask for medications.
