Effects of Deep Cellulitis Infections

Cellulitis is an infection of the skin where it was previously wounded. The bacteria Stapylococcus and/or Streptococcus are the main causes of the said infection. These bacteria are both present on the surface of man’s skin, however, they become really risky and dangerous once inside the skin. Their way of entering the skin is by the occurrence of a wound, by breaks and cuts, by boils, burns, etc., therefore, a man with skin problems should be very wary and make sure that the wound or skin disease is regularly treated, cleaned and dressed or bandaged, if necessary.

Deep cellulitis infections are usually caused by the ignorance of the person infected by the disease. Immediate treatment is needed for cellulitis for it to be cured completely. Antibiotics are usually given to persons with mild cellulitis while these antibiotics are combined with intravenous and oral medications once it has advanced to the moderate stage. The severe stage, however, is another story.

Severe cellulitis infections require urgent medical attention, admission and if necessary, surgery should be administered. If cellulitis is not treated properly, the bacteria causing the infection may spread rapidly across the human body through the blood streams affecting other areas. A super bacterium called the MRSA (Methicillan Resistant Staphylococcus Aurues) is a “flesh eating foreign body” and is one of the most famous bacteria causing cellulitis to become severe. This bacterium has become immune to the antibiotics being prescribed to patients with cellulitis, thus, allowing the infection to spread deeper into the body. This bacterium, however, only affects those whose immune systems are already dysfunctional because the Staph bacterium, as mentioned above, is not harmful when it is on the surface of the skin.

When a person develops severe cellulitis infections, the only remedy is surgery, which may lead to amputation to cure cellulitis. The limbs or body parts affected has to be surgically removed in order for the infection to stop spreading rapidly into other body parts. This may seem to be a very disturbing way to cure cellulitis but it is the only option available to patients with deep cellulitis infections. If amputation will not be administered immediately, the after effects will be much more disturbing. There are ways, however, on how to prevent this type of severity by the infection. The proper washing of hands by the persons making direct contact to the patient has been proved to be very helpful. The use of gloves and other sanitized items to treat the patient is also necessary because the MRSA bacteria usually thrive in hospitals and nursing homes. You should always keep in mind that these diseases can always be cut short by taking preventive measures firsthand.
